Washington DC is a spectacular place to celebrate July 4th with fireworks shows! The National Mall, with Washington DC’s monuments and the U. S. Capitol in the background, forms a beautiful and patriotic backdrop to America’s Independence Day celebrations. This is an all-day event in the nation’s capital, beginning with a parade along Constitution Avenue and ending with a spectacular display of fireworks over the Washington Monument. Following is a guide to all of the 4th of July events on the National Mall.

The 4th of July celebrations in Washington, DC are among the most attended events of the year and many people arrive early to stake out a seat on the lawn. There are plenty of activities scheduled throughout the day to keep the whole family busy.

Getting to the National Mall

The best way to get to the National Mall is to take the Metro. Stations nearby include Metro Center, Gallery Place-Chinatown, Judiciary Square, Federal Triangle and L’Enfant Plaza. The Smithsonian Metro station will be closed for most of the day for security reasons. The station will reopen for entry-only shortly after the fireworks show has concluded to help get people home. It typically takes 1 ½ to 2 hours to clear the Mall after the fireworks shows.

Public access to the National Mall begins at 10:00 a.m., with all visitors required to enter via a security checkpoint.

Washington, DC’s Independence Day Parade

Washington, DC’s 4th of July Parade features marching bands, military and specialty units, floats, and VIP’s. The parade draws a large crowd, so plan to arrive early to stake out a good viewing spot.

Fireworks display attracts so many people. There are peoples who simply enjoy the luminous explosions of light, color and sound. Others enjoy being surprised by the shape and color of the fireworks bursts. These shapes and colors do not happen by chance. They are deliberately produced by a careful combination of physics and chemistry.

Fireworks generate three forms of energy sound bright light and heat. The notable feature of firework display, the colors come from the different temperatures of hot, glowing metals and from the light emitted by burning chemical compounds.

Firework

The composition inside the firework must however contains six vital ingredients:

Fuel – Black powder is the most common fuel used in fireworks. Normally, all fuels will contain an organic element such as charcoal or thermite. Basically, every sort of firework is made with black powder or the chemicals which black powder is made of. The chemicals used to make black powder are Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal, Sulphur.

Oxidizing Agents – Oxidizing agents produce oxygen to burn the mixture. The usual oxidizers used for pyrotechnic powder compositions are: Nitrates, Chlorates, Perchlorates

Reducing Agents – Common reducing agents are Sulphur and carbon These burn the oxygen provided by the oxidizing agents to produce hot gasses. These react with the oxygen to form Sulphur dioxide and Carbon dioxide respectively.

Regulators – Metals can be added to regulate the speed at which the reaction. The larger the surface area of the metal, the faster the reaction will proceed.

Binders – A type a starch, which holds the composition together, it is a most commonly used binder known as dextrin. Binders are used to hold what is essentially the mixture of the firework together in a paste like mixture. As binder are too unstable within the firework and are potentially dangerous they do not actually begin to work until the firework has been lit.

Coloring Agent – The different colors that we see during fireworks display are produced by chemicals. To produce different colored fireworks different chemicals are used. Therefore, a right combination of corresponding chemicals or a mixture of chemicals need to produce a certain color.

Of course, there is much more to understand and learn about the chemical reactions in fireworks. However, next time when we all look up at the sky we will get a little better understanding of what we are seeing.

Fireworks Safety

Celebrations of outdoor cookouts, parades, and fireworks have become a family tradition in the summer. But, fireworks can turn into an unplanned trip to the emergency room or at least a painful memory when children and adults are injured. Even the more seemingly safe fireworks such as “sparklers,” have caused severe burns and eye injuries with children.

To help consumers use fireworks more safely, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these recommendations:

Young children should not be allowed to play with fireworks under any circumstances.

Sparklers, often mistakenly considered a safe firework for young children, burn at very high temperatures and can easily ignite clothing. The sparks that are emitted can easily cause burns to hands and exposed skin. Young children cannot understand the danger involved and often will not act appropriately in case of an emergency.

Older children should only be permitted to handle fireworks under close adult supervision.

Do not allow any running or horseplay, and parents should review safety procedures before allowing an older child near any fireworks.

Observe local laws concerning use of fireworks.

Ignorance of fire bans due to droughts or permanent restrictions is no excuse. Most local media provide thorough coverage of what is allowed and what isn’t each year prior to traditional fireworks events.

Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from houses, dry leaves or grass, and flammable materials.

Each year, tragedies occur where fireworks land on a rooftop or open field, and then the fires quickly spread beyond anyone’s expectations…and unfortunately, any control.

Keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies and to douse fireworks that do not properly ignite.

Some fireworks that seem to be duds may later light up and at least fizzle, creating dangerous situations for those participants who aren’t aware of their power and possible ignition later.

Do not attempt to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

Soak them with water and throw them away.

Be sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.

Accidents can easily happen with fireworks that aren’t aimed in the right direction or ignite prematurely.

Store fireworks in a dry, cool place.

Check instructions for special storage directions.

Never have any portion of your body directly over a firework while lighting.

Be sure to wear protective eyewear. An errant ember could cause permanent eye damage or, in extreme cases, blindness.

Don’t experiment with homemade fireworks.

Enough said here, right?

Be sure your state even allows consumer fireworks.

States that ban all consumer fireworks include: Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Another seven states only allow sparklers or novelties.

In the end, child advocates recommend that it is best to leave the fireworks displays to the pros. The enjoyment can be greater, the cost less, and the experience a safe one.

Fireworks are enjoyed year round by people. There is nothing like a grand firework displays. The sky is on fire with splendid colors. We all love them, and we look forward to enjoying them on special occasions. Fireworks of all shapes and sizes, colors and noises, are now so readily available. We all are aware of safety for people and children, but we sometimes forget that wildlife should also be considered.

Research studies shows that the loud sounds of fireworks do have an affect on wild animals as well as domestic animals. Using fireworks near animals is both cruel and inhumane as explosive fireworks cause immense fear and stress.

Number of dogs have formed a serious phobia about fireworks. They have an increased, hysterical reaction to these sounds. Firework displays near animals can produce a blind panic that can lead to serious injury, deep-rooted, enervating fears, or even death. Most of the animals have more sensitive ears than human ear. Therefore, the explosion of a firework not only is proportionately more disturbing to an animal, it can also affect an animal’s acute sense of hearing. It create a noise level higher than the noise from gunshots and low level flying jets. During firework displays most birds fly away in fright and nesting mothers endanger the well-being of nestlings when they sometimes cannot find their own nest upon return. Laying hens show extremely low egg production the day after fireworks and the eggs are often malformed. Fish ingest the debris and die, sometimes even causing the deaths of scavenging animals that eat them.

Firework produce light, noise and air pollution. The explosion also release poisonous chemicals and particle laden smoke, contaminating our natural environment. It pose a danger to wildlife living in or near areas where firework display occur, as well as wildlife downwind. Those animals who are with their families must consider themselves fortunate.

Dr. David Noakes, a zoologist at the University of Guelph, Ontario, points out that the combined responses to fireworks of panic and disorientation can result in birds’ flying into a building or too far out to sea. Researchers at Acadia University, Nova Scotia, found that colonial species of birds who nest in high densities, such as the herring gull, are most at risk during a round of firecracker explosions.

For animals, firework displays are no cause for celebration. It remain a holiday fastness in most communities around the world, despite the exaggerated acceptance of options such as laser light shows and neighborhood festivals. Below are the few safety tips that should be followed to protect animals from firework:

Use only nontoxic, non percussive fireworks.

Percussive fireworks should never be allowed in residential areas.

Firework displays should not allowed where wildlife gathers or nest.

Firework displays should be limited to specific areas, and should be kept short.

Advance warning notices should be posted so that people with dogs and cats can keep animals indoors during firework displays.

Fireworks Display

Make plan-

Most people don’t keep in mind that it is exceptionally crucial to plan earlier before going to photograph a fireworks display. One should reach the place of activity before start of the firework event. One should be clear regarding set up of the fireworks display and also know where firework will be highlighted.

If possible try to ask the organizer about their plans for the event. View the location properly and take notes about the lightings and surroundings. After viewing you can decide what lenses and focal lengths to be used. Preparing in advance and anticipating are the most essential tasks in firework photography.

To frame and focus-

Aiming your camera on the right spot is the most difficult part in fireworks display photography. Your camera should be aimed before the fireworks display begins. You should focus your camera manually or set it to infinity. If you use auto focus mode in low light, you may miss lot of shots. Keep your focus in advance mode and fix your focal length by adjusting them accordingly.

Shutter Speed -

Shutter speed is an ordinary keyword which is used to explain about exposure time and effective length of time a camera’s shutter is open. The total exposure is proportional to this exposure time, or duration of light reaching the film or image sensor. It’s not essential to set your shutter speed to a very low setting. The provocation to keep your shutter open for so long is because of night time and it’s advisable to do so. The difficulty is that fireworks display is extremely bright and you might over expose them by ending up not having a clean and nice shot. What you may get is too much of the smoke in you photograph.

Aperture-

Aperture is size of the opening in lens when the picture is taken. Lot of people think they have to open up full lens so that they could capture them all. Remember that fireworks display emit very bright light so you should set your aperture between mid to small for good quality photograph.

ISO-

ISO is a setting in camera, if we change ISO, it changes image sensor’s sensitivity to light. You should always set your camera at lowest ISO possible.

Capture the mood and surrounding-

When you photograph fireworks display, you should not just capture the photograph of the fireworks but you should also remember to involve background and foreground of the display. Fireworks display is always associated with some kind of celebration or events; in your photograph you should capture those associated things, such as people, places and landmarks which make your photograph more meaningful.

Number of shots -

You should take as many shots as possible so that you should not miss a single action. Fireworks displays are rapid. From being lighted to every point in its trajectory to busting into vibrant colors, every point is important.

The Origin of Fireworks

We have seen many fireworks shows around but now let us know about history of fireworks. Motherland of fireworks is mainly acknowledged as China, with the first explosive mixture found being black powder, during the Sung dynasty (960-1279). It is said that a cook in ancient china found that a mixture of sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal was very flammable and would explode if enclosed in a small space. The earliest application of this technology was for just amusement and pleasure. Chinese are still on the top for the production of fireworks. Once the recipe for black powder was perfected, they found that they can easily use it as rocket fuel, and they used to cut and make wooden rockets in the shape of dragon in 6thcentury. These rocket powered arrows shot from their mouth, and which were used to hit against the Mongol intruder of 1279. The tactics behind these rockets is still used in rocket powered fireworks in present times.

Fireworks Shows

Fireworks shows are amazing opportunity to acknowledge pyrotechnics in all their glory. Fireworks come in numerous collection of shapes, colors, and designs, which can be used by everyone whether normal man or professional fireworks employers to make beautiful displays. There are various public and private fireworks shows for holidays and events. There are different types of fireworks that are used, as well as how you can put on your own fireworks display at home.

Commercial fireworks shows are only used by professionals, and in most cases they are not legal for an individual to make a purchase. There are assorted various grades of fireworks shows for majority countries. There are regulations to keep everyone from owning and firing pyrotechnics that are powerful enough. There are ample of fireworks that are legal approximately all around. These can be used to create fireworks shows in your own back yard. For instance, there are different types of candles, small rockets and other kinds of fireworks ready in markets and can be used by anyone who purchases which can be integrated to create an ultimate firework show.

Commercial grade fireworks are also manufactured by companies to actualize a large scale fireworks shows, usually during public celebrations and holidays. These fall into a number of different styles. For instance, many shells will give a spherical disperse of stars (the points of light you see) either with or without tails trailing after them. They can go straight out or droop and fall creating an effect very much alike to a weeping willow. Some do not ignite until they are about to fall, creating an effect similar to a waterfall. There are also fireworks that are designed to split into smaller stars after detonating, creating a crossing pattern, or to spit out sparks as they rise and split. The number of different types of fireworks shows is staggering, as they are used all over the world for many types of celebrations.

Billy Gilbert Dowell, 48, of 15,349 Meneses Road, legally acquired the chemicals needed to make a rocket, a type of rocket, the Internet, “said the sheriff.

“He will not face any charges because what he bought is not illegal, and he agreed to give up the rest of the chemicals,” Blakely said.

East Limestone Fire Department had been called about 9:25 p.m. to a report of fireworks exploding in a man’s had. Gilbert was mixing chemicals for what he called “flash crackers,” when the explosion occurred, the sheriff said.
